Safety & Loss Control Programs

Since the inception of the California Transit Insurance Pool (CalTIP) in 1987, the pool has provided varying degrees of safety and risk management services to its members with the primary goal of reducing CalTIP's overall claims experience. In CalTIP's early years, the services provided were similar to those that a commercial insurance carrier may have provided, which included on-site safety audits and claims reviews. In the last several years, CalTIP has developed and maintains its own set of minimum standards for safety that is far beyond public bus transit system safety standards. Programs and services such as System Safety Program Plans (SSPP), American Public Transit Association (APTA) membership, educational webinars, e-briefs, safety alert posters, electronic employer pull notices, criminal background check policies, and bus operator pre-employment surveys are some of the key enhancements to CalTIP.

The CalTIP Member Services Committee meets with Risk Control staff twice a year to provide guidance and direction. CalTIP has become a safety leader in the transit industry. By actively working with each member to implement preventative policies and procedures, CalTIP is offering much more than insurance against losses.
